It seems like just yesterday that I started this blog I called “Spectorbrain”. It all began about 4 months ago.
[cue the daydreaming music and fuzzy transitions]

One day, I think it was a Tuesday, I was innocently avoiding work with some Jib Jab animations on-line when I was interrupted by some energetic ramblings. I turned around to see someone who just seemed to appear out of thin air. Due to his fast-talking and multiple digressions, I didn’t quite understand everything that was being said. But for some reason, the word “blog” keep coming up.
I curiously asked, “What is this blog that you’re speaking of?” He explained the ins and out of blogging and several hours later, I was convinced. At that moment, I knew I must blog. But when I turned around to tell him the good news, he was gone.
After minutes of intense blog training and preparation, I wrote my first post, “Hot Dog Hijinks and Frank’s Fun Facts“. Although this was an entertaining and politically-charged article, I quickly decided to refocus my efforts towards my passion and profession - design.
Now, 50 posts and one site redesign later, I’m proud how this blog has grown and appreciative of everyone who has made it possible. Thank you for your readership, comments, e-mails and support.
And a special thanks to those who have helped drive traffic to Spectorbrain over these last few months including:
Without you, I’d just be writing for the Garfield figurine on my desk. Thank you all.
Epilogue: I recently met up with the mystery blogger at the local mall. He was finishing his second cup of Dippin’ Dots as he approached. He congratulated me on my blog with a solid handshake. We talked for a few minutes before he turned to walk away. “Who are you?” I asked. He replied simply, “You can call me Burbanked.”

Justin Lim - design theorist, critic, and self-imposed “hot guy” - has written a wonderful critique about one of my previous posts, “Should food be in food advertising?” In it, he breaks down the article into its essential elements and very effectively relates it to various points of view in design theory and criticism. Justin’s review is well thought out, clearly written, engaging, and gave this designer’s ego a nice little pat on the back.
Now, I could easily take the high road and let you read the full critique as it’s meant to be read. Or I could take the low road and quote some of the highlights. Hmmmm…The low road. A little self-serving, but what the heck.
Spectorbrain is yet another example of how a blog can effectively contribute to the world of design, through criticism.
The manner in which Spector writes, is highly personal and emotive especially in painting the background story of what influenced his tackling of this issue/s.
I found this blog post an enjoyable and thought provoking piece of design criticism.
All kidding aside, I really appreciate Justin’s honest and insightful critique. After being “encouraged” to join the blogging addiction, I spent a lot of time understanding and refining my voice. I know this is a never-ending process, but I’m glad to see that the impression of me on-line is aligned with my intentions.
On a side note, I truly urge, nudge, and force all of you to take a look at Justin’s blog. Not because of appreciation or reciprocation, but for the simple fact that it is intelligently written and a great read. I spent some time on his other posts, after my review of course, and I definitely think it’s worth it.
Thank you, Justin.

Ladies and gentlemen. Fellow brainheads. The voters have spoken and their word is Spectorbrain. I have just been notified that this blog has received enough positive votes on Design Snack to move our listing from an Appetizer to the Entrée Menu. What does this all mean?

“If, within a certain period of time, there are NOT enough positive votes, the Appetizer is then removed from the menu and deleted. If it DOES receive enough positive votes, it leaves the Appetizer menu and becomes an Entrée. Once an Appetizer becomes an Entrée, it is a permanent addition to Design Snack.”
This is a time to congratulate and to refocus. There is still more work to be done. Add those positive votes and comments. We must not stop until we reach the Dessert Menu and secure our place in history. Vote now.
“When an Entrée receives a Cookie Award, it is removed from the Entrées Menu and put on the Dessert Menu, the highest menu level on Design Snack. Cookie Awards are given to those sites that represent an excellence in design and functionality.”
Do you want that Cookie? I want that Cookie. Say it with me. Cook-ie! Cook-ie! Now, get out there and vote. And as always, thank you for your support.

Come on, all you brainheads. Grab that optical mouse, get comfortable in that uncomfortable office chair and take some Advil for that Carpal Tunnel. Spectorbrain needs your vote.

This site has recently been submitted to Design Snack and is up for review. I need your help to show the world how much I enjoy writing Spectorbrain and you enjoy reading it. Give a positive vote, post a comment, and shout in all caps to every e-mail you write, IM you chat and blog you visit when you should be working. Together we can make this world a better place (or at least give this blog a few more votes).
Thank you for your support.
